The writer in question was likely referencing China's former One-Child Policy, first instituted in 1979 and later overturned in 2015. Legend was quick to defend his friend from cruel commentary, as were others on Twitter.

It's hardly a surprise that the musician would stick up for Kim on Twitter. After all, she and John are long-time friends-- the pair and their respective spouses once even dined together at the Waffle House, so you know it's real.
